THOR Takes Spiderman Release Date

We heard that Spider-Man 4 is facing some delays over the script.  This could result in the movie not being ready for its planned May 6, 2011 release date.  Sony has released two of the three previous Spider-Man films during this first week of May and would like to continue this tradition.

According to Variety, Paramount and Marvel Entertainment have decided to move Thor's release date from May 20, 2011 to the coveted May 6 date.  Following this move, Disney decided to take Thor's former date and now plans to release Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on the twentieth.

Sony has not officially abandoned the release date.  This first week of May marks the first week of summer and is highly sought after by the studios.  Scheduling has to be done carefully as to not create too much competition that could affect box office results.  It's unclear what will happen if Sony does keep its planned May 6 date.  Most likely Thor would have to move again but with Pirates released on May 20, Paramount might not want that sort of competition on an opening weekend.  The rest of the summer is pretty full as well with Green Lantern set for June 17 and Transformers 3 on July 4.  The next Harry Potter movie and Captain America movie are also set for July 2011.

We'll have to wait to see if Spider-Man will even be ready for a summer 2011 release.  Despite Sony not officially giving up the May 6 date, Deadline Hollywood announced that VFX crew have been encouraged to "look for other work."  If we don't get Spider-Man that summer, it sounds like we'll have plenty of other summer blockbusters that will keep us entertained at the theater.
